File Management

Course length: 1 day (3 hours)

Overview: This class covers file extensions, creating folders and sub-folders, creating a folder from a program, file paths, saving to external storage, and proper file hierarchy.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of computers skills.

Note: Each participant will receive a USB flash drive to take their exercise files with them.

CLASS OUTLINE

The Computer

  • How the computer organizes files
  • Identifying file types by extension
  • Following paths to locate files
  • Proper hierarchy of files
  • Common keyboard shortcuts

Folders

  • Create a new folder on the desktop
  • Naming folders
  • Deleting folders
  • Creating sub-folders
  • Move files between folders on the desktop
  • Create a new folder from MS Word
  • Save files from MS Word
  • Open files in MS Word

Using an External Device (Hard-drive, USB Flash drive, CD, DVD)

  • Viewing files on an external device from the file explorer
  • Opening and saving files from external device from within programs
  • Moving files from the computer to an external device with the file explorer
  • Burning CDs and DVDs properly

Finding Lost Files and Folders

  • Using the search feature to locate files and folders
  • Advanced searching
